Mental health support in South Africa: private, remote and community routes into care
People may need different entry points into mental health or recovery care. Doorstep supports private, remote and community pathways so a person can ask for help without being forced into one setting. Immediate danger, self-harm risk, overdose or severe withdrawal requires urgent crisis or emergency support.
Different people need different ways to start
A person may prefer a private phone call, video session, peer callback, community visit, group support or clinical assessment. Doorstep’s role is to preserve choice while separating ordinary support from urgent risk that needs escalation.
Privacy can be part of access
Fear of stigma at home, work or in the community can prevent someone from asking for help. Safe-contact preferences and neutral messaging can reduce that barrier without hiding clinically important information from the professionals responsible for care.
Crisis support is different from routine care
If someone may harm themselves or another person, has overdosed, is in dangerous withdrawal, is severely confused or is otherwise in immediate danger, routine booking is not enough. South Africa has dedicated crisis and emergency resources, including the SADAG Suicide Crisis Helpline and national emergency services.
Questions people ask
Can I request mental health support without visiting a Health Desk?
Yes. Doorstep supports remote, private and community options; a Health Desk is only one possible entry point.
What if I need urgent help right now?
Immediate self-harm risk, overdose, dangerous withdrawal or other life-threatening danger needs urgent crisis or emergency support rather than a routine Doorstep booking.
Can an employer see my mental health notes through a workplace programme?
Doorstep’s workplace model is designed to provide privacy-safe programme reporting without exposing individual diagnoses or private clinical notes to the employer.
